Statement from Maggie Toulouse Oliver on Trump Administration’s Family Separation Policy

New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver on Wednesday made the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s policy of separating immigrant children from their parents at the border:

“Families belong together. It really is that simple. As a mom and as a New Mexican, I refuse to stay silent about the Trump Administration’s inhumane practice of separating immigrant children from their parents. There are dark chapters in American history: We put Japanese Americans in internment camps; we took Native American children away from their parents; and we sold black children into slavery. Have we learned nothing from our past? I am ready to lend my voice, my time and my energy to right this wrong, stop family separation and reunite families.

“Backward-thinking policies like family separation remind me that whom we elect matters. And that means your vote matters. As we head into the November election, please make sure you are registered to vote and that you cast a ballot that reflects your values. We can make positive change when we make our voices heard.”

New Mexicans elected Maggie Toulouse Oliver to serve as their Secretary of State in a 2016 special election, after the previous Secretary of State when to jail for corruption. Since taking office, Maggie has held elected officials accountable for campaign finance violations, shined a light on dark money in New Mexico politics and made it easier for New Mexicans to register to vote and to cast their ballot.

Maggie is co-chair of the National Association of Secretaries of State Elections Committee and is a member of the Elections Government Sector Coordinating Council, a national effort to coordinate federal and state resources to ensure safe, secure elections at all levels.

Previously, Maggie served as Bernalillo County Clerk for nine years, where she made protecting the right to vote, improving the integrity of the election process and ensuring accountable leadership her top priorities.

Maggie is running for re-election to serve her first full term as New Mexico Secretary of State.

Maggie grew up in New Mexico, graduated from Albuquerque Public Schools and received her Bachelor’s Master’s degrees in Political Science from the University of New Mexico. She has two sons and lives in Santa Fe.
